Longhorn Brussels Sprouts Recipe (1)

You all know I’m a big fan of Longhorn Steakhouse around here, so when I got a request for a copycat of the crispy Brussel sprouts….well, how could I resist?! Since I was able to cover the Lonhorn broccoli recipe, it’s time to try something new.

I ordered a side of them from Longhorn To-Go, and both my husband and I couldn’t believe how delicious they were. I mean, I didn’t even realize Brussel sprouts could taste good.

But they were quite delicious, and I will definitely be getting them the next time we go out.

It took me a few tries to get this recipe to the point where I wanted to find it. I did a lot of research to see if there were any ideas for how to make them online, and I did find someone on Reddit who claimed to get the recipe from a cook at Longhorn.

So I based this recipe off of that and made a few adjustments (as well as made the rub myself – which is where you might find the most room for improvement with this recipe).

How to Make Longhorn Brussel Sprouts Crispy

Longhorn Brussels Sprouts Recipe (2)

Making crispy brussel sprout is pretty easy. Brussel sprout is a vegetable very similar to cabbage.

Although it is smaller in size, its preparation method is pretty much the same you have to wash it, trim the edges, get rid of the yellow leaves, and blanch it for 4-5 minutes.

Next, drain it and sprinkle your favorite spices. Next, you can either flash fry it in a pan or place it in an oven. Whatever method you choose, you will end up with a delicious plate of Brussel Sprouts.

Are these really like Longhorn Steakhouse?

I would say this is about 90% like the ones at Longhorn. I found the recipe (roughly) on reddit, though it just said “Calabrian Chili Rub” – I think my rub is close but not exactly what they use. You can definitely play around with the spices in it, though.

But I would say this is a definite contender. They are crispy and absolutely delicious! Just like what I did with my copycat Longhorn Spinach dip recipe. It cannot be further from the original.

FAQs

Why do you soak Brussels sprouts before cooking? ›

The soak time tenderizes the sprouts so the middles are softer. Don't worry, they won't be soggy! I would never do that to you. If, like me, you don't mind some chew to your sprouts, you don't need to soak the Brussels sprouts prior to cooking.

Why are restaurant brussel sprouts better than homemade? ›

The combination of techniques, searing then roasting, is what gives restaurant Brussel Sprouts the upper hand on the until-now pathetic homemade variety. Eureka! Avoid using a glass baking dish with very high sides, as this will trap moisture inside the pan, causing the sprouts to steam rather than roast.

How to reheat longhorn Brussels sprouts? ›

Reheating – The best way to reheat your leftover crispy Brussel sprouts is to bake them in the oven. Simple preheated oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 4 to 5 mins, or quickly toss them in a hot skillet or pan. You can also reheat them for 1-2 in the microwave.

Should you boil Brussels sprouts before roasting? ›

Unlike other vegetables, Brussels sprouts can be parboiled (even a day ahead) to reduce the roasting time without hurting their texture. That means the sprouts can be popped in the oven while the meat is resting before carving. Of course, if the main course is grilled or pan-cooked, the oven will be free for roasting.

Should you cut Brussels sprouts in half before cooking? ›

To maximize the flat areas, which get the most crispy surface area, cut your Brussels sprouts in half. If your Brussels sprouts are very small, you can leave them whole (and if they are very large, quarter them).

How long should you soak Brussels sprouts in salt water? ›

It won't take a lot -- just add 1 tablespoon of salt per 1 quart of water and toss in trimmed and halved Brussels sprouts. Soaking the sprouts in salt water doesn't take long --10 to 30 minutes is plenty long enough to soften up the centers.

Which is healthier broccoli or brussel sprouts? ›

While broccoli may have a higher count of calories, fat, and carbs, it is richer in calcium, iron, and pantothenic acid (a B vitamin that does wonders for healthy hair), and has a bit more potassium. Brussels sprouts, on the other hand, are lower in sodium.

What makes Brussels sprouts taste better? ›

Over the last twenty years, farmers have mellowed the "unpleasant" flavor of brussels sprouts by breeding a vegetable that contains fewer bitter compounds or glucosinolates. So, brussels sprouts just taste better than they used to when we were kids. The rub is that glucosinolates help protect sprouts against pests.

Why do my Brussels sprouts taste weird? ›

If brussels sprouts taste bitter to you, you may have a gene that senses bitter compounds in brassicas. It is similar to the gene that makes cilantro taste like soap to the people who have it, and like a yummy herb to people who don't.

Why are my roasted brussel sprouts bitter? ›

Brussels sprouts and other cruciferous vegetables like cabbage and broccoli are bitter mainly from a specific type of compound: glucosinolates. They are released when cell walls are damaged from cutting or chewing.

How do you crisp up already cooked brussel sprouts? ›

Leftover Brussels sprouts can be warmed up in the microwave, but if you want there to be some crispness to the caramelized edges, you can warm them in a skillet on the stove. Alternatively, you can spread the leftovers in a single layer on a sheet pan and warm in a 350°F oven until warmed through.

Is it better to blanch brussel sprouts before roasting? ›

To guarantee great texture, do both! Trim and halve your brussels, then blanch and thoroughly dry them, and then roast at a high temperature until the outer leaves are starting to blacken. Moisture is the enemy of crispiness.

Why are my roasted brussel sprouts not crispy? ›

Why Are My Brussel Sprouts Not Crispy? Spread them out into a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet to avoid overcrowding. If they're too close together, they'll steam instead of roast which stops the crisping process.

Why are my oven roasted brussels sprouts mushy? ›

Veggies have a much better chance of crisping up when placed directly on a metal baking sheet. Don't overcrowd your pan. As your sprouts cook they will release a bit of moisture. If all of them are crowded in a small pan, that moisture will begin to steam the Brussels, resulting in mushy sprouts.

Should you wash Brussels sprouts before roasting? ›

To prepare brussel sprouts, you should rinse them well or even soak them if you have enough time. Trim the bottoms and outer leaves off, then cut them in half to prep them for roasting.

How many hours sprouts should be soaked? ›

What do you soak brussel sprouts in to clean them? ›
